Poultney- Viola Mabel Lincoln, 88, died Saturday, October 11, 2014 at The Pines of Rutland where she had resided for the past three years. Her passing was peaceful after a long struggle with the ravages of dementia and heart disease. Her strength, stubbornness and Wade wit remained with her until the endlightening the load of others, and will forever remain in the hearts and minds of those who loved, admired and cared for her.
Born March 5, 1926 in Wells, Vermont, she was the daughter of the late Fred M. and Eva (Hutchins) Wade. The seventh of ten children, she was named for her mothers two best friends, but always claimed she never knew her name was Viola until she was in the first grade. She was so talented at an early age that she advanced quickly to the second grade side of the room.
Mabel attended Poultney schools and was a lifelong resident of Poultney. She met her lifelong love, Ralph Ernest Lincoln at the youth group of the East Poultney Baptist Church. They married on January 30th, 1944 in the living room of his parents home in East Poultney while he was home on military leave from the Army during WW II.
She was employed at Rutland Hospital as a nursing aide for twenty years and was a homemaker in the truest tradition of her time. Many family and friends still remark about her carefully checking on them during their hospitalizations. .
Mrs Lincoln is a lifelong member of the East Poultney Baptist Church, now the United Baptist Church on the Green. She sang in the choir, and from the pew with a lovely voice.
Surviving family members include one daughter, Melanie Lincoln Potter ( Hollis, deceased) of Poultney (Thomas Cottone, Sr. partner of Queensbury, NY ; one son, Wade A. Lincoln and his wife Laura of Nashville, TN; one brother, Maurice Wade of East Poultney; four grandchildren, Jesse Wade Lincoln (wife Parker Lincoln) of Decatur, GA, Nathan Daniel Potter (wife, Christie Dang) of Brooklyn, NY, Amanda Kate Potter of Columbus, OH (husband Jeffrey Vardaro), and Amy MacDonald (husband Paul MacDonald of Decatur, GA; five great grandchildren, Ruby Viola MacDonald, Hazel Laura MacDonald, Eliza Mae and Jack Lincoln, Eleanor Mabel Vardaro; also many nieces and nephews, especially her niece Nancy Parker Moyer, always faithful.
Mabel was predeceased by her husband, Ralph E. Lincoln in 2007, by brothers, Clifford Wade, Harold Wade, Roscoe Wade, Fred Wade and Peter Batease; by sisters, Jessie Parker and Mildred Manning.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, October 14th from 6-8 PM at Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home, 266 Allen Ave., Poultney. The funeral service will be conducted at the United Baptist Church on the Green (East Poultney Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 11 AM with the Rev. Stephen Payne, former pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Poultney Cemetery on the hill beside her husband and son-in-law. Luncheon will be in the meeting room at the church.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the United Baptist Church Building Fund or the Alzheimers Association in her memory.
