Obituary

Poultney, VT – Steven R. Lawless, 79, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on March 3, 1946, Steve was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, a devoted family man, and, by his own admission and many others', a stubborn red-headed Irishman through and through.

He brought that same passion and determination to everything he did—from his early career at Staco to his years at United Technologies, where he was known for taking pride in his work, and a sharp sense of humor.

Steve made his home in Poultney, where he and his loving wife Elizabeth—who predeceased him—raised their family with hard work, laughter and heart. Taking the love of growing dahlias from his father, Steve was known for his beautiful dahlia garden, where he would spend countless hours tending to his blooms. Later in life, alongside his brother, he found joy in wood turning, crafting everything from pens to ornaments with skill and care.

He is survived by his son, James Lawless and James's husband, Jeff McMorris; grandchildren: Christopher, Cody, Corey, and Kaydence; daughter, Christina Lawless and grandson, Jayden; and brother, James Lawless and James's wife, Judith. He was also predeceased by his parents, James and Caroline Lawless, and his sister, Carol Jenson.

A graveside service will be held on June 14th at 11:00 AM at Poultney Cemetery, followed by a reception at the J. Claire Carmody American Legion Post 39 in Poultney, Vermont at 1:00 PM. All who knew and loved Steve are invited to gather, share stories, and raise a glass in his memory. In lieu of flowers please donate to the American Legion or American Dahlia society.
