IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Salome "Red" L.
Garrapy
August 8, 1928 – March 6, 2025
Salome "Red" Garrapy, 1928-2025, died 03/06/2025 at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a short illness. Red was predeceased by her husband, Dean Garrapy, and youngest daughter, Rachelledeeyne Garrapy, as well as her parents, Jim and Winifred Hughes, and all of her siblings: Donald Hughes, Natalie Duffy, Billy Hughes, Daphane Wade, and Doug Hughes. Red is survived by her two daughters, Nyokadeeyne "Noka" Garrapy (Bill Davis) of Fair Haven, VT and Caroldeeyne "Carol" Boice (Allan Boice) of Whitehall, NY, as well as three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Having lived more than 96 years, she saw so many changes in this world. For a few years, she worked for the dress factory on Main Street in her beloved town of Poultney. The same town she spoke fondly of roller skating over slate sidewalks and attending movies in. She was a wonderful seamstress, providing many with anything from the simplest frock to a prom or wedding gown. Many of her Halloween costumes won prizes in Poultney schools' Halloween contests. Her greatest love, after her husband, children and extended family was her love of books. This showed in many ways …Her favorite way was as librarian at the Poultney Elementary school. Encouraging future generations to both educate and entertain themselves through the written word. Her nuggets of wisdom will remain with us all to pass down from generation to generation. Her final gift was the anatomical donation of her body to the UVM Medical School. She always encouraged others to do the same.
At Red's request, there will be no calling hours or services.
As a family we want to send a special thank you to the staff at Rutland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for their kind and dedicated care during Red's 18 month stay. We would also like to thank the staff at Rutland Regional Medical Center ED, PCU, and 5th floor for their care and many kindnesses during Red's final stay.
