Obituary

Rutherford Mason Rudy VanVeghten 93, formerly of Poultney died Tuesday morning January 13, 2015 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. He was born July 12, 1921 in Cooksboro, NY., the son of Everett and Katherine (Foster) VanVeghten. He was a graduate of Poultney High School class of 1941 and attended Green Mountain Junior College in Poultney and also Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, PA. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater. He was a former resident of Manchester, Vt moving back to Poultney in 1978 after retiring from New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. Rudy was a member of the J. Clair Carmody American Legion in Poultney and also the American Legion in Manchester where he had previously served as commander. He was a member of Adoniram Lodge # 42 F & A.M. of Manchester, Cairo Temple of Shriners of Rutland serving as a Trumpeter with the Drum Corps., Adoniram Chapter # 22 O.E.S., Evergreen Chapter # 63 of Poultney now Fair Haven Chapter # 70 O.E.S. Rudy had served both chapters as Worthy Patron and was very active with different committees and also served on the Rainbow Girls Advisory Board. In 1986 Rudy was asked to be a member of the Grand Chapter of Vermont and held the Honor of Worthy Grand Patron 1988-1989 during the Rainbow Love Session of Grand Chapter, he was honored with the Rose Medallion Award from the General Grand Chapter in 1994 and recently received his 65 year member pin from the Adoniram Lodge # 42 F & A.M. Rudy is survived by his children, Rudy VanVeghten of Ayer, MA, Bonnie Klass of North Carolina and step daughter Patricia Waite of Hebron, NY; by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren and also several cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Parker) VanVeghten in 1978 and by his siblings, Harold VanVeghten and Jane Elizabeth Thibodeau. Graveside services will be held in the spring in Delwood Cemetery, Manchester, VT. Memorial Contributions may be made to a charity of ones choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home. .
