Ruth Woodman Czar has died at age 93 on October 14, 2016 of complications from dementia.
Ruth was born April 22, 1923 in Rye, New York, the daughter of H. Staunton and Cecil Cornwall Woodman. The family moved to Ridgewood, New Jersey, where she graduated from Ridgewood High School with summers spent at her fathers family farm on what is now Woodman Hill in Vergennes, Vermont.
She attended Furman University where she also volunteered at the local USO, the beginning of a career in volunteerism that culminated with her being named 2004 Citizen of the Year of Poultney, Vermont. She received a Master of Arts degree in Music from Columbia University, and also studied at Yale University and at Grenoble University in France. After a career as an instructor in Music theory and organ, she managed classical musicians as they traveled around the eastern United States, then left that position to be assistant manager of the university auditorium at the University of Connecticut, where she met her husband, Jonathan Czar. They moved to Poultney, Vermont in 1959 where they lived for the next 50 years while Jon taught at Green Mountain College.
Ruth played the organ at the Poultney Methodist church while volunteering for many organizations around town, especially for the Poultney Public Library and the Poultney Historical Society. What probably brought her the greatest joy was being grandmother to her two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her two sisters, Cecil Woodman Thompson and Ann Woodman Shoemaker. She is survived by her two children, Natalia Czar and Jonathan Czar, and her two grandchildren, Katy Czar and Addison Czar.
Her children like to think she is young again and dancing at a USO at the edge of the universe with her friends who died in the war. She never forgot them and always kept a space in her heart for them.
A short Memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Sunday, October 30th at the Methodist Church in Poultney with Rev. David Adams officiating. Followed by a reception with refreshments.
In honor of Ruth and the energy she put forth, we would love for donations to be made to the Poultney Historical Society and the Poultney Public Library.
Arrangements are under the direction of Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home. Online condolences can be made at www.Robertsaubinfuneralhome.com
