ROBERT SPRENGER EAST POULTNEY- Robert Francis Sprenger, 95, a resident since 1987 died June 10, 2014 at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Born February 17, 1919 in Mount Vernon, NY, he was the son of the late Franco and Angelina Sprenger. In his early childhood his family moved to Manhattan where he lived in multistory walkup apartment. His primary education was in Manhattan public schools. He often talked of being a Street Kid, earning nickels and dimes running errands for local businesses. He attended Randolph Macon College in VA and in 1942 was accepted to John Hopkins Medical School. Because of WWII he joined the United States Marine Corps and became a fighter pilot. His service included the Pacific and Middle East. After leaving the USMC in 1946 he was a trader on Wall Street. His great love was music, especially Jazz of the 40s. He spent much of his free time in small music clubs in Harlem. He became acquainted with many Big Band leaders at the Apollo Theatre in New York and has an extensive collection of Jazz recordings of that era. In 1986, he purchased a farm which he often referred to as his House Home after having lived in apartments all his life. During retirement he enjoyed carpentry and restoring old furniture. He loved country life in Poultney and made many friends in the area and was well known for his dapper colorful haberdashery. A widower, he is survived by a brother, Kenneth Sprenger of Manhattan; and was grateful for his long friendship with Serena, Nanci Smith, Rene Condrill, Susan Condrill Richard Condrill, William Osborn and Lloyd G. Bart Bartholomew. His friends wish to thank the staff of Rutland Regional Medical Center for the excellent care he received in his final days. Friends may call Saturday, June 14, 2014 from 12 Noon until 2 PM at Robert-Aubin Funeral Home, 266 Allen Ave. Poultney. for fellowship and remembrances. There will be no funeral service.
