Richard Allen Sawyer, 83, of Wells, VT and Ocala, FL passed away on May 13, 2017 in Ocala. He was born December 15, 1933 in Ira, VT the son of John and Eva (Durkee) Sawyer. He graduated from Poultney High School class of 1953 and considered his class mates his second family. He served in the United States Army in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. He was employed by Williams Machine in Poultney, VT, Telescope Furniture in Granville, NY and General Electric in Rutland, VT. He was a member of Morning Star Lodge # 37 F. & A.M. of Poultney now Lee Lodge # 30 of Castleton, a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Cairo Temple Patrol and Drum Corp, and a life member of the American Legion Post # 39 of Poultney. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, he loved all the boys and made sure they all played. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, camping and playing cards, football and the Phillies. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Joan (Stratton) Sawyer; sons, Richard Jr. his wife, Lisa, and Thomas and his wife, JoEllen; granddaughter, Casey; and grandson, Adrian; great granddaughters, Katie, Stephanie and Adalyn; a brother, Marvin Sawyer and his wife, Paulette, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Hank, Bob and Merrit Sawyer; and sisters, Madeline Beach and Edith Pratt. A celebration of his life will be held at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home 266 Allen Ave, Poultney, VT on Tuesday June 6, 2017 at 1 P.M., with the Rev. Todd Eaton, Pastor of the United Baptist Church of Poultney officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Poultney Cemetery.
