Obituary

Hampton, NY Louise Isabella Lenihan Louise Isabella Lenihan, 91, died Friday, August 26, 2011, at Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Granville, NY. Born on October 22, 1919, in Rotterdam Junction, NY, she was the daughter of the late William P. Finn and Myrtle (Becker) Finn. A longtime resident of Schenectady, Mrs. Lenihan worked briefly for the Schenectady Trust Co. After marrying William S. Lenihan of Schenectady on April 5, 1941, she devoted her entire life to her husband and family, raising five children. Upon her husbands retirement from the General Electric Co. in 1979, she moved to Hampton, NY. She lived with her son and daughter-in-law in Laurinburg, NC, for three years, returning to the area in 2007. While raising her children, Louise remained a voracious reader, serving as an example to her family and others of the importance of literature as a means of broadening ones knowledge and awareness. Her sense of humor helped to imbue in her five children a keen sense of language awareness, exemplified by her use of humorous and sometimes cryptic family sayings. She was also proud that she quit smoking in 1978, after thirty-nine years. She will also be remembered by relatives and friends for the special meals she cooked on Saturdays and holidays, as well as customized desserts for birthdays and special occasions. The entire family wishes to express a special thanks to Mrs. Lenihans daughter-in-law and best friend, Jean (Corcoran) Lenihan, who cared for her over the past several years. Jeans devotion to her mother-in-law was constant, untiring, and given in a spirit of selflessness that the family will be grateful for forever The Lenihan family would like to thank Judy Holbrook and the staff at Holbrooks Adult Home in Granville for their kindness and compassion while caring for Mrs. Lenihan during her stay there. Also, thanks go to the nursing staff, their assistants, and all other staff members who cared for Louise during her stay at Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Granville.. Mrs. Lenihan was pre-deceased by her husband in February of 2000; a brother, William Jesse Finn; and a sister, Marian Scholz in 2011. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia L. Ayres of Farmington, NY and Maryjane C. Conti of Charlotte, NC; three sons, W. Scott Lenihan Jr. of Hampton, James M. Lenihan of Desert Hot Springs, CA, and Peter J. Lenihan of Poultney, VT; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. There will be no viewing hours. A memorial service is planned for the near future. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be given to the Poultney Public Library, 205 Main St., Poultney, VT 05764.
