Leo George Loomis, 93, passed at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 3. He was born on October 3, 1921 in Wells, Vermont. He was the son of Mary Warner and Leslie Loomis. Leo received his education at Granville High School.
On November 4, 1944, he married Dolores Durham Loomis of East Poultney and they celebrated 68 years of marriage until she passed on August 15, 2012.
At age 16, Leo became one of the original members of the Modern Woodman of America in Wells and helped organize the first annual carnival in 1938. He was a member for over 76 years and was recently honored as the longest serving member of the Wells fraternity. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and was a member of the Post 39 American Legion in Poultney. For many years, he was a member of the St. Raphaels Parish and the Mens Club. Leo was an avid card player and loved vintage cars.
Leo worked at H.W. Wescott Garage in East Poultney for over 35 years. After retirement he helped his sons at Loomis Paint Store. He also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program, babysat for many of his grandkids and was ready to help at a moments notice.
Survivors include his children Mary-Jean Beninati and husband, Frank; Richard Loomis and wife, Trish; Robert Loomis and wife, Sherry; Lawrence Loomis and wife, Susan; Timothy Loomis; and Alicia Marcy and husband, Gary.
Grandchildren include Michael Beninati, Jennifer Beninati, Mat Loomis and wife Emily and great granddaughter, Ava; Nick Loomis, Amanda Loomis, Katy Loomis, Nathan Loomis, Caleb Loomis and wife, Vicki; Jacob Loomis, Christian Loomis, Brittany Marcy Rouleau and husband Nicolas; and Eric Marcy.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Raphael's Renovation Fund at 3 East Main Street, Poultney or the Poultney Rescue Squad.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, March 8 from 3-5 P.M. at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney. A mass will be held at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, in Poultney at 11 am Monday, March 9, 2015.
