Jonathan A. Czar, for many years a teacher at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt., has died at age 90 on July 18, 2013, of natural causes.
He was born April 17, 1923 in Torrington, Connecticut, the son of Joseph J. and Mary Ann Czarnecki. He was a graduate of Meriden High School. After service in World War II in the Pacific theatre as a high-speed radio telegrapher with the 13th (AF) Fighter Command, he graduated in 1949 from the University of Connecticut at Storrs. He was a member of the American Veterans Committee.
After graduation, he served on the news staffs of the Bridgeport (Ct.) Telegram, the Chicago bureau of the Trans-Radio Press, and the Meriden Star. He served as editor of the East Haven (Ct.) Weekly News for three years from 1952-55 before resuming his education at the University of Connecticut and earning an M.S. in botany; and, later, an M.A.L.S. in the natural sciences at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.
Mr. Czar retired in 1987 after 28 years of teaching as a member of the natural sciences department at Green Mountain College. He taught subjects in the general field of biology.
Mr. Czar was a member of the Town Planning Commission and the Development Review Board in Poultney, in addition to serving as a justice of the peace. He also served several terms as a chairman of the Democratic Town Committee and as a founder and promoter of the D & H Rail Trail Advisory Council.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Woodman Czar, of Rutland; a daughter Natalia, of Huntington; a son, Jonathan J. of Tinmouth; two grandchildren, and five nieces and three nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Henry J. and Joseph E. Czarnecki, along with his sisters, Helen Pepe, Estelle Hancock, and Nathalie Norrie.
He was a cat-lover who will be remembered as a man who fed wild turtles and partridges by hand, and had a "pet" chickadee who would perch on his baseball cap when he walked over to his pond.
A memorial service will be held at Green Mountain College this Saturday, July 27th at 1:00pm in The Gorge of Whithey Hall with Pastor Mac Ray presiding.
