George "Abbott" Davis, age 81, died peacefully at home on August 13, 2020 from complications due to Alzheimers Disease. Abbott was born in Sterling, MA on November 28, 1938 to George S. and Elizabeth (Fletcher) Davis. He grew up working on his familys fruit and dairy farm surrounded by many generations of family members. Abbott graduated from Wachusett Regional High School and Dartmouth College, Class of 1961. On July 29, 1967, he married his wife of fifty-three years, Jean Shattuck, of Poultney.
After college he had a forty year career in real estate investment. He was employed by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance, Metropolitan Life Insurance and by the New York State Teachers Retirement System. During his time with Metropolitan Life he worked at the Midwest field office in Chicago, the Southwest field office in Houston as the regional vice president, and the home office in New York City as chairman of the Real Estate Investment Committee. Following his Metropolitan years he was employed by the New York State Teachers Retirement System as head of the real estate investment department. Upon his retirement in 1999 he was asked, as a result of his reputation and knowledge, to serve on several Boards of Directors of large real estate funds. Among the companies that Abbott worked with were LaSalle Management, Lend Lease, Hines Corporation, and UBS. He especially enjoyed this final phase of his career as it allowed him to travel and work with people he respected and admired.
Abbott was a voracious reader with knowledge in many fields, and enjoyed puttering in his flower and vegetable gardens. He played the violin as a young man, loved classical music and owned a large collection of recordings. Of special interest to him was the life and works of J. S. Bach which he studied extensively. Abbott was a member of the Poultney United Methodist Church and a former member of the Poultney Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; by his daughter, Elizabeth Benham and her husband Keith of Tucson, AZ; his son, George S. Davis and his wife Mary Ann of Fishers, IN; and his son James A. Davis and his wife Heather of Merrimack, NH: and by five grandchildren, Mikayla, Annalise, Davis, Abbott and Sam. Also by a sister, Mary Beebe and her husband William of Cotuit, MA; a brother, Dix Davis and his wife Sarah of Worcester, MA; by two step-brothers, John and Robert Davis of Sterling, MA; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Poultney Cemetery.
