Obituary

Estella DeEtta (Dee) Moldt Eichhorn passed away November 25 at Mountain View Center, Rutland VT, at the glorious age of 101. Dee was born August 14, 1915 in Palatine Bridge, NY, the second of four children of Fred John Moldt, Sr. and Mabel Schermerhorn Moldt. Dee graduated from Canajoharie High School in June of 1933, and left home to attend Green Mountain Junior College in Poultney, VT, where she would meet the love of her life, Richard Eichhorn. They were married August 7, 1937, and on July 25, 1938 Dee gave birth to their only child, Sue Claire Eichhorn. Green Mountain College would forever be intertwined in their lives: Richard was bursar there for 25 years, and Dee worked in the bookstore. Sue Claire also attended, and graduated in 1958. "Dick n Dee" were always involved with college events, loved to go out dancing with friends, and most of all, enjoyed spending summers at their lake cottage on Cones Point on Lake St. Catherine. But being a homemaker was nearest and dearest to Dees heart, and caring for her home and family was the light in her life. Dee was an extraordinarily gifted seamstress and made beautiful clothes for herself and Sue Claire. Dee could see a dress in a store window, then go home and make it without a pattern. Whether sewing, knitting, or crocheting, her hands were rarely idle. Also an avid reader, Dee was often deep into the latest best seller or historical novel; she had a collection of books to rival the local library. Dees garden was a great joy to her, and spring through fall would see her tending the beautiful blue baptisia, bright orange quince, purple and white lilacs, and the many colors of iris, as well as the giant peonies she brought to Poultney from her fathers own garden in Palatine Bridge. Dick and Dee lived for family and were very close to their grandchildren, whether spending every July with them at the lake cottage, or travelling to Florida every spring to see them there with Sue Claire and her husband, Louis Callesis. Dee saw the transition from horse and carriage to motor cars, gas lights to electricity, telegrams to telephones, radios to television, airplanes to space shuttles, depression to prosperity and with a twinkle in her eye and a quick smile, took it all in with the grace and humor so characteristic of that generation. There will be no services, but Dees ashes will be laid to rest alongside her husband, who has been patiently waiting these twenty years for her to join him, in the Poultney cemetery early next summer. Dee is survived by her two grandchildren, Harry Callesis of Alpharetta, GA, and Jennifer Callesis Woodell of Rutland, VT, and her nephew, Fred John Moldt III of Utah. She was predeceased by her husband, daughter, and her three brothers Fred Jr., William and Bernard Moldt. Dees arrangements are being provided by Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney, VT.
