IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dr. Olive "Jo" M.
Davies
May 27, 1925 – November 17, 2024
Dr. Olive "Jo" M. Davies, 99, died November 17, 2024 at home. Jo was born on May 27, 1925 to the late Dr. Richard W. Morris and Frances Thomas Morris. She grew up in Vermont and met the love of her life, Dr. Robert "Bob" I. Davies, when she was just 8 years old, he 10. Her early years began without indoor plumbing or electricity. She had a clear memory of the arrival of electricity and no longer having to carry a lantern up to bed. Jo's interest in medicine began when her father, the town doctor, regularly pulled her from school to develop X-rays. She graduated from The University of Vermont undergraduate school in the 1940's and was one of the first women to graduate from The University of Vermont College of Medicine. She and Bob married in 1949 after Bob's extended recovery from injuries sustained in WWII. Jo went on to complete a residency in pediatrics, one of three residencies open to women in Vermont at the time.
Upon completion, she not only had given birth to her first two children, but she also became one of the first pediatricians to practice in Newport, Vermont where she earned 50 cents for house calls that were often miles from home. Despite frequent house calls, Bob and Jo soon welcomed their third child. They moved to Massachusetts for Bob to complete his residency in radiology, and there they had two more children. Jo later worked for the Greenfield, MA public school district and Stoneleigh-Burnham, a private high school, where she served as the school physician and health teacher. Much to the dismay of her children, she was tasked with teaching sex education to their peers. In 1980, at the age of 55, Jo completed a second medical residency, this time in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, which had always been her true passion. She practiced in that field in the Albany and Amsterdam, NY areas for over ten years until her retirement.
In retirement, Jo and Bob enjoyed traveling around the world and to their condominium in Satellite Beach, Florida. But nothing was more important to them than their home on Lake St. Catherine (VT) where they spent summers and Christmas holidays surrounded by family. Jo was a true caregiver, not only for her husband with his life-changing war injuries, but also for her extended family and the many souls who arrived at her doorstep seeking help for a myriad of conditions ranging from dislocated shoulders to peas up the nose. Jo will also be fondly remembered for her pride in her Welsh heritage, playing a mean card game of "Forty-Five," and her insatiable appetite for ice cream.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bob, and was adored by her children: Laura (Douglas) Davies Tilley of Arnold, MD; Leigh (Larry) Davies Krohmal of Delmar, NY and Biddeford, ME; Wendy (Karl) Davies Eckert of Arlington, VA; Beth (George) Davies Carpinello of Delmar, NY; and Robert (Alison) Davies of Slingerlands, NY. She was Nain (grandmother) to Ashley (Andy) Krohmal Fung, Atalia (Alec Roy) Krohmal, Robert (Kristin) Tilley, Alyssa (Jeremy) Tilley David, Olivia (Kyle) Carpinello Kurt, MD, Alexis Carpinello, Lucas Carpinello, Robert J. Davies, Bryn (Kevin Fahrenkopf) Davies. She also leaves five great grandchildren: Scarlett Tilley, Brooke Tilley, Odin Carpinello Kurt, Griffin Carpinello Kurt and Kellan Roy. Jo will also be missed by her three siblings: Marilyn O'Keefe, Myrna Boyce, and Richard Morris, and their families.
Services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Poultney, VT on November 30, 2024 at 1:00 PM. Interment will immediately follow at the Poultney Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Fair Haven Inn.
