Donald E. Smith, Sr. , 81, died Sunday, July 22, 2012. Don was born on July 26, 1930, in Elizabeth, NJ, the son of Charles Warren Smith and Gladys (Carley) Smith. He spent his childhood in Roselle, New Jersey.Shortly after he graduated from Abraham Clark High School, he moved to Manchester Center, VT where he worked on a dairy farm. In 1953, he moved to Middletown Springs, VT where he lived the rest of his life. For several years he operated his dairy farm and later raised Angus cattle, enjoyed showing Morgan horses, as well as selling and servicing Arctic Cat snowmobiles. He worked for Simmonds Precision for a few years, and then was employed by Journal Press of Poultney for nearly 30 years. In the 1950s, when the Middletown Springs Volunteer Fire Department was founded, he was a member and later served on the Board of Directors. Don enjoyed many outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing, golf and cutting wood on his farm. He especially enjoyed his grandchildrens activities such as football games and horse shows. He also enjoyed travel. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Muriel, and his children, Wendy C. Hayes and her husband, Tom of Richville, NY, Donald E. Smith Jr. and his wife Jill of Poultney, VT and Cynthia L. Mayer and her husband Alan of Bristol, VT. He is also survived by grandchildren, Rebecca Roberts, Elizabeth MacDonald, Heather Dillon, Sarah Hayes, Carrie Hayes, Justin Smith, Matthew Smith, Cassandra Mayer and Katrina Mayer. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Jonathan Roberts and Lisabeth Roberts. At Dons request, there will be no calling hours or service.
