Obituary

David Joseph Brown, 76, died Sunday, December 25, 2016 at The Pines at Rutland. Dave was born in Hampton, NY on May 20, 1940 to Joseph and Marion (Fellows) Brown. David was a graduate of Poultney High School, class of 1958. He began his working career at the age of 14 by setting pins at the Poultney bowling alley and bicycling home to Hampton at 11:00 p.m. While still a student he worked at the dress factory in Poultney and then as a clerk in the A&P supermarket. He went on to work at Grand Union Supermarkets in Rutland, Brandon, Manchester, and Bennington, Vermont, and North Adams, MA. In the early 1970's he went to work for Agway, Inc. in North Adams then to Greenfield, MA. A transfer to the dairy route division of Agway in Brattleboro, VT was the beginning of a very successful career as a dairy route salesperson, selling to farmers up and down the Connecticut River valley. David retired from Agway after it discontinued its dairy route service and worked for several years at Cersosimo Lumber Company in Brattleboro, VT. David was active in a church in every town in which he resided, serving as treasurer, deacon, or elder. He was a Past Master of the Bennington (VT) Masonic Lodge and had been an active member of the Northfield (MA) Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling and gardening. David also had a friendly feud with his brother-in-law as to who could grow the most or biggest tomatoes. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Carol (Carter) Brown, daughters and sons-in-law, Susan (Christopher) Scott of Richmond, NH and Judith (Daniel) Collette of Erving, MA, granddaughters Colleen (Kyle) Walker and Katie Soltysik, and grandson Connor Scott. He is also survived by sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Robert Anderson of Poultney, and sister-in-law Jackie Bartenstein and Joyce Robarge of Rutland and Barbara Carter of Arden, NC. He was predeceased by his parents and stepfather Fred (Sully) Hughes. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2017, 2 p.m. at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home, 266 Allen Ave., Poultney, VT with the Rev. Hannah Rogers, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Rutland officiating. Because of his compassion for children in poverty, memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Foodbank, P.O.
