Obituary

Alvah Hobart Low 89, died Monday afternoon May 2, 2016 at his residence after a long illness. He was born February 4, 1927 in Montgomery Center, Vt the son of Rev. Alexander Ritchie Low and Clara (Peebles) Low. Mr. Low attended public schools in Johnson, VT, and graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA. Upon graduation from Hargrave, Mr. Low entered the U.S. Army and served in the U.S. Army of Occupation Italian Theater Headquaters in Livorno, Italy, from 1945-1947. After being discharged Mr. Low continued his education and entered the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT, graduating with a B.A. degree. After a year of graduate study at the University of Michigan, he earned his M.A. in English from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. He did further years of post-graduate study towards a Ph.D at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, and Oxford and Durham Universities in England and received a Ph.D from Knightsbridge University, U.K. Mr. Low taught English at Upsala College in East Orange, NJ, before moving back to Vermont to teach English at Green Mountain College in Poultney and also at Castleton State College, Castleton, VT. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Marjorie (Steele) Low who is a native of Quincy, MA: of East Poultney; cousins in Texas and Canada; a brother-in-law, W.E. Steele, of Braintree, MA; a sister-in-law, Dornae P. Steele of Weymouth, MA; two nieces, Christine Steele and Suzanne Steele; goddaughter, Jane Tolman, of Slingerlands, NY; a loving home health care aide Tina Crandall, of Poultney, VT; special friends; Joan Henehan of Los Angeles, CA: and Poultney friends, Karen Finamore, Brenda Jones, Tonya and Mike McLaughlin of East Poultney; Bill Osborne and Mr. Lows precious cat, Abby, who was his best friend for 11 years. Mr. Low was a member of the St. Davids Anglican Parish of Poultney, the American Legion, and Theta Chi Fraternity. He was a very private man who lived in the world of books. There will be no funeral services or visiting hours per his wishes. Mrs. Low is working with the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home with his arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland County Humane Society at 739 Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763.
